Founder, Board Certified Nurse Practitioner
Erin J. Bagshaw completed her undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at George Mason University. She then went on to complete her Nurse Practitioner/MSN program at George Washington University School of Medicine/George Mason University, graduating with honors.
Ms. Bagshaw has worked in the settings of the Emergency Room, Internal Medicine/Primary Care, Occupational Health and Travel Medicine since graduating. She has served as a consultant to other hospitals and has written the protocols for these departments on blood borne exposures, latent tuberculosis, work place injuries and immunization practices.
After working in these various department capacities, Ms. Bagshaw saw an opportunity for her vision of a medical practice and the way she thought care ought to be performed. A diagnosis is 90% history, but most practices did not have a model that gave the patient time to be heard, questions to be asked, and treatment to be completed within the framework of not only the standard of care, but with the partnership with the actual patient. Ms. Bagshaw opened the first independent Nurse Practitioner practice in Washington, DC, Northwest Nurse Practitioner Associates, Inc. on April 21, 2004. She was the first independent Nurse Practitioner to be granted hospital privileges at Johns Hopkins Sibley Memorial Hospital in 2007 and is an active member of the medical staff in addition to have served as a member of their Ethics Committee.
She has served as both President and Past President of the Nurse Practitioner Association of DC and served on the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Committee for the DC Board of Nursing. She won the State Award for Excellence in 2007 for “Excellence of Care and Outstanding Contribution to Practice” from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Besides being a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner, she is also a Certified Functional Medicine Provider through the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM-CP), holds a Certificate in Travel Health (CTH) from the International Society of Travel Medicine and is also a Certified Medical Legal Consultant and has served as an expert witness to national law firms.
Ms. Bagshaw is a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine, Nurse Practitioner Association of DC, International Society of Travel Medicine and Certified Legal Nurse Consultants. She is also a member of the International Women’s Forum of Washington, DC.

Karen is passionate about finding simplicity in all things – a valuable skill in her prior legal career which required translating complex topics into readily digestible information that could be more widely shared. Now she combines this penchant with advanced nutrition and functional medicine education. She recognizes the need to help improve patient outcomes by simplifying nutrition and lifestyle recommendations – information that is often deemed to be overwhelming and conflicting.
Karen has a Master of Science in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and is a Board Certified Nutrition Specialist. She completed an intensive residency program in Functional Nutrition through a functional medicine teaching clinic.
