How Functional Medicine Can Help
Acute COVID-19 is ever evolving, but there is testing available, and some outpatient treatment approaches. This page is dedicated to those patients suffering from chronic symptoms post COVID-19 and the question if Functional Medicine can help. As of now, those patients with continued symptoms past acute infection, generally 4 weeks or greater are called “Chronic- COVID-19”, “Long Haul COVID”, “Long Haulers” or “Post-Acute Chronic COVID-19”. Just as there is not one standard name yet, there is no standard of care for these chronic symptoms, and the symptoms can range from moderate to debilitating. Chronic symptoms range from continued fevers, joint pain, shortness of breath, brain fog, loss of taste/smell, stomach issues, memory issues and palpitations; an overall feeling of a worsening of quality of life. We have only begun to see the toll that COVID-19 has taken on quality of life. While we are also Board Certified, experienced Primary Care providers, there are no treatment options that have come forward in Primary Care unless damage can be seen on conventional diagnostic imaging or lab tests. In most cases, none can be seen. The Functional Medicine model is to make the body just that, more functional. As a certified Functional Medicine provider, we are experts at lowering inflammation, a main driver of destruction during COVID illness. NNPA has created a comprehensive approach for treating these chronic symptoms that look at biomarkers, amino acids, essential nutrients, genetics, hormonal pathways and gut health. We are treating these dysfunctions and seeing improvements. We cannot “cure” the virus or guarantee a time period by which symptoms will resolve, but we can help your body heal and lower/modulate the inflammatory response that comes from it and correct these dysfunctional pathways through a Functional Medicine approach.
